Larissa Laban is a Brazilian artist and designer, based in São Paulo. She works in different media such as airbrush, oil painting and ceramics to create textured, energetic and bold figures to her works.
Laban creates scenarios that exist in a suspended absence, with her characters predominantly floating against a black background, offering viewers enigmatic paintings depicting a liminal world. The umwelt of these animals is governed by kitsch objects, trinkets, an old telephone, and a collective secret that has yet to be revealed. Perhaps here, her works translates into comfort but also into complacency—her characters adapt to a kind of solitude and content themselves with it, whatever they live by is more than enough. Laban's palette, filled with deep tones, highlights the duality between the present and the absent, creating an atmosphere of mystery—as seen in the balance between her use of airbrushing and oil painting. In this universe, each organism becomes an artifact of hidden meanings, and the viewer is challenged to decipher the secret they keep. Between both floors, we can understand that the art of Laban doesn't ask questions or provide answers. Her art confuses us, inviting us to think differently, shifting our references. Ultimately, the characters created by the artist show that communal imagination is a precursor to collective knowledge, reinforcing what the concept of umwelt offers: the understanding that complete universes exist beyond our own.
